1 Our American boat is moored in port at St. Symforien on the Canal du Rhône au Rhin.
2 Entering
the Canal du Marne, we visit a butcher at Pontailler for Burgundian
specialties to be enjoyed aboard when we tie up at noon along a shady
bank.
3 A
lock house where there is often a kitchen garden; we buy lettuce and
tomatoes from the keeper, and sometimes cherries.
4 We
pass through a lock where the water has been allowed to rise to meet
the higher level of the canal ahead.
5 In late afternoon we often tie up near a village and unship the bikes.
6 We
sometimes pedal to a hotel for showers and dinner when one is indicated
on the route chart. This is the Hostellerie du Chateau de
Bellecroix at Chagny on the Canal du Centre.
7 Schoolchildren
admire our Conch Republic flag of Key West waving next to the tricolor
of France.
8 Our little péniche makes way on the river Soâne.
9 Along the banks are patient fishermen, sometimes with two or three rods and lines.
10 A group of children explain the electric lock device.
11 On
a Sunday morning in June at St Jean de Losne, the church conducts the
annual Grand Pardon des Mariniers. Commercial barges and
pleasure boats in the area are decorated with flags and flowers and
assemble at a specified dock. The Mass is sung by the
Canterelle and is followed by the Benediction of the Boats.
12 On
Market Day we browse through a village square to find local wines and
famous Burgundies.
13 A hungry swan shares our bread.
14 The cruise ends as we leave the river to enter our 'home' canal.
15 The boat sleeps here in Burgundy all winter until next year's summer cruise.
